Pruning Trees and Shrubs

There are several reasons to prune your trees:

  • Removal of dead or diseased branches
  • Remove lower branches, or branches growing in towards the center of the tree
  • Maintain appearance and shape

When removing large limbs from trees it is important to do so while the tree is dormant, typically during the winter months. Pruning at this time of year allows the cuts to seal and heal before new growth begins in the spring. It is important to use a sharp saw to ensure a clean and precise cut, and to prevent from tearing any bark.

Pruning your shrubs:

Shrubs are primarily pruned to maintain their shape and appearance. It is also important to remove any dead stems. There are several tips to follow, as pruning shrubs primarily depends on the time of year they bloom.

  • It is typically best not to prune in the summer months due to stresses placed on the plant
  • Shrubs that bloom in the summer should be pruned in the winter
  • Shrubs that bloom in the spring should be pruned after they bloom
  • Non-flowering shrubs should be pruned in the spring.
